correct and partially wrong. it looks like the nra's proposal is a lot like exactly what happened after 9/11. immediately though grabbed any federal agent they could to throw them on the planes and later on they put together a really poorly implemented program to arm pilots. and not very many volunteered for the program. i can see the reality. look. he is right in some regard. if someone shows up at a school and there is an armed principal and armed guard clearly that is not going to happen it's unseasonable for starters. it is impractical. let alone the safety implications that come out of all of this. did it work in the skies though? >> well, could argue that it is working because there hasn't been an incident but it looks like every time an american aircraft that gets hijacked there hasn't been any air marshals or both planes that have in iad's on board most of them didn't have armed marshals on them and i don't think there were any armed pilots on them either. so, the air marshall program alone is a billion-dollar program. and the armed pilots program is a lot of the pilots believe it

of its first steps toward tougher gun laws and it comes as the nra is speaking out for the first time since the tragedy. dan lothian at the white house this morning. let's start with the white house before we get to what the nra is saying. what's the latest there? >> good morning, the latest development is later this morning, the president will announce he's tapping vice president biden to head up an interagency effort to try and come up with policies in order to address gun violence. the president will be making announcement in the white house briefing room. he will be joined by vice president biden. we are told by white house aides that this will be more about the process, rather than laying out any policies, but nonetheless this comes one day after the white house started getting a bit more specific about what the president would support. such as senator feinstein's effort to reinstate that ban on assault weapons. also measures that would address the issue of mental health. all of this coming as the white house has been getting a lot more pressure to come up with some action points

of this latest massacre in newtown connecticut, with 26 people being dead and the big majority of nra members in favor of at least starter reforms to our gun laws, the biggest barrier to reforming our laws now may just be the pervasive common wisdom that it's not even worth it to try. modern history defies that common wisdom. but it persists. it persists, maybe. now, the last time we talked on the show about the long, long and long lost modern history and bipartisan gun reforms was in the wake of the tucson shooting this past weekend. and in the wake of that shooting, the tucson shooting, this was the general assessment. gun control dead. a nonstarter. shootings unlikely to change laws. don't expect any changes. that was our random survey of the headlines last january after the tucson shootings. at least if you asked the beltway shooting gods. now it seems like the common wisdom may be less certain. look at the headlines now. and it's more like this. debate on gun control is revived. lawmakers call for tougher gun laws in wake of newtown massacre. gun control debate simmers after sandy hook m
